Expedite the Banana factory to save farmers from agony – Ongwae urged

Farmers in Kisii have urged the county government has been urged to fast-track the banana processing factory process to ensure that farmers produce from the region does not go to waste.

The farmers speaking to Gusii star said that they have been selling their produce at throwaway prices to middlemen and the factory will cushion them from that.

The construction which was funded by the European union worth Sh110 million grant in 2017 is almost done. Their has been sharp reactions over the processing plant an issue the county government has said is on track according to scheduled time and cautions any speculations over the same.

The county executive member of Agriculture Mr told Gusii star that most of the structural work is already done and the county is waiting for the clearance to get machinery for the factory to get started.

“We are already have a building and we are about to get clearence to produce machinery then installation and the plant will be operational”, said Mr ……… adding that the process is oncourse.

Farmers who sell their produce in Keumbu, Daraja Mbili, Keroka markets told Gusii Star that they have been waiting for the factory for a long time. Which they believe will be helpful to sell their produce at reasonable prices

“I have been transporting my bananas to this market for many years but I sell them cheap to middlemen who then take them to major towns and make huge profits,” Peter Otuke said.

He said the factory will not only save farmers from exploitation by middlemen but will also create employment for unemployed youth.
