Impressive results of National Super League (NSL) side Shabana FC’s against Kenya Premier League [KPL] side AFC leopard during Mashujaa day cup , its now hopeful for the team management and head coach that the club is able to seal promotion in the near Future.
This comes after Shabana Skinned Fc leopard 1-0 during Mashujaa cub , the only goal which was scored by Shabana’s striker Fred Nyakundi, the match which was played at newly refurbished Gusii stadium .
The last time the two sides met, Leopards survived a Shabana scare to progress to the round of 16 of the SportPesa Shield after a 2-1 win in 2018 at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.
The match was attended by hundreds of home fans who cheered the Kisii side throughout the 90 minutes among them the county’s executive for sports Duke Mainga,Kisii chief officer Agriculture and Cooperative Development Mogire Geoffrey and Senate speaker Ken Lusaka being the chief guest.
According to the head Coach Vincent Nyaberi the club has more than 10 new players, mostly young whom the club had signed during the window period, were being incorporated in the team one after the other in a move to strengthen the squad.
He attributed the results to home fans who usually attend home matches in large numbers.
After the impressive results now the team is happy after receiving a major boost on their quest to seal promotion to the top league after the head of state Uhuru Kenyatta gifted them a 62-seater bus on Wednesday.
According to sources last week, the club’s fans wrote to President Uhuru Kenyatta requesting him to donate a bus to the club when he presides over the Mashujaa Day celebrations that were held on Tuesday in the region citing financial constraints.
President Uhuru who was in Kisii for a two-day visit had invited players, the technical bench and the club officials to the state lodge that was finalized recently within Kisii town where he donated the bus.
“I received the letter that you wrote to me requesting for a bus. The letter was delivered by governor James Ongwae and his Nyamira counterpart John Nyagarama when they paid me a visit at the state house” said the President adding that he is aware of the financial constraints and in that regard i will give you Sh5m while former prime minister Raila Odinga will add Sh1m
The head of state also tasked the Cabinet Secretary for sports Amina Mohamed who was in attendance to work with the devolved unit in ensuring a tartan track is installed at the newly refurbished Gusii stadium and the drainage system improved.
Speaking to Gusii Star after they had received the bus, the club’s vice chairman Yabesh Nyandoro said the bus will cut transport cost.
“The club has been using a lot of money in terms of transport m i would like to thank the president for the support, we real appreciate ” He said
In his part , the county’s Football Kenya Federation (FKF) chairman Jezreel Mbegera said Shabana was a top tier team playing NSL games while appreciating the head of state for the big support to the club
“Time has come for Shabana to seal promotion and pave the way for other teams. If the President can honour its request, it means the club has national support” noted Mbegera.
Shabana coach Vincent Nyaberi was elated with the president’s gesture, saying the bus will ease their traveling logistics for home and away matches this season.
