Kisii Kenya 16 June 2021 ……………………Members of Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) have threatened to down tools over the government’s delay in paying salaries to the staff and reducing funding to the universities.
Addressing the Press on Wednesday at Kisii the Union’s national Secretary General, Dr Constatine Wasonga said the union was concerned with the delay and urged the government to pay the staff salaries for May like other civil servants in the public sector.
Wasonga noted that it was wrong for the government to pay universities 70 percent of the salaries and for the Institutions to pay 30 percent.
He said union officials do not understand why the government pays 70 percent and expects universities to raise 30 percent and urged it to pay all the money from the ex- Chequer.
“It’s unfortunate that the Government has been reducing capitation for public Universities and it’s high time we are demanding to know what happened , as the Union we are demanding that the government pays 100 % salary for academic staff in all universities as they pay other employees is other public sector” he said
The Secretary General said the Union does not want what happened at Kisii University and Egerton where staff salaries were reduced by 40 percent, terming it wrong and unacceptable.
“ Kisii University, Kenyatta, Moi and Jomo Kenyatta University of Applied Technology ( JKUAT) have not paid salaries to their staff. The Union will not take it lightly and demand that our members be paid” Wasonga told the Press at Ufanisi Resort in Kisii County
He said the Union noticed the delay two months ago, adding some universities had been given capitation and their staff paid while others had not, adding it was wrong for the government to release funds intermittently to the universities.
Wasonga who was accompanied by Union National Chairperson Prof, Muga K’Olale nad other Union Officials said that they don’t want such scenarios in Universities .
